Social Cohesion
The term social cohesion refers to the bonds, or "glue," that holds a society together, often through common values, beliefs, and behaviours. Strong bonds indicate a higher level of social cohesion as shown by large percentages of the population following the rules of the society and displaying tolerance for one another.
Divisive Societies
-
Divisive society: A divided society. A society that doesn't agree with each others opinions and a society that doesn't work together.
Democratic Safeguards
-Governments uphold our shared values: Our parliaments and government make and enforce laws to protect our shared values so that all citizens are treated with dignity, equality and mutual respect. They allow Australians to live together in a cohesive society where citizens cooperate and live together in a peaceful, inclusive and tolerant manner.
-The right to dissent: Individuals generally have the right to oppose/disagree with the views held by the government. We can also publicly express that disapproval in a lawful manner without fear of being censored/punished. An example is protests.
-The people elect the government: Each of the state, territory and federal parliament's throughout Australia is elected by the people to make laws on their behalf.
-Processes to resolve differences: In order to keep peace in Australian society, processes exist to help groups/individuals resolve their problems/disputes.
