Nihilism comes from the Latin nihil, meaning “nothing.” In philosophy and literature, it refers to the rejection of meaning, value, or purpose in life or in moral systems. Nihilism is the belief that life lacks inherent significance — that human existence is accidental, the universe indifferent, and traditional systems of belief (religion, morality, social order) ultimately groundless.
