1.2 CONCEPT OF INFORMATION
DATA
Data is collected and analyzed to create information suitable for making decisions.
Characteristic of data:
becomes information by interpretation.
tangible part of information.
durable and can be used for a long time period.
INFORMATION
Information is knowledge derived from data can consist of images, text, document and sound.
Elements of information:
accurate and timely.
specific and organized.
presented within a context and gives meaning.
lead to understanding and decrease uncertainty.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge is the information that is found to be relevant, strikes the mind, can be interpreted, stored on a medium or in the mind, and used for purpose.
Example of knowledge:
learning alphabet.
the ability to find location.
remembering details about an event.
INFORMATION SKILLS
DEFINE: to identify what info is needed.
LOCATE: to search for info at its correct location.
SELECT: to chose the best info.
PRESENT: to best way to inform audience.
EVALUATE: to learn from mistakes and make things better.

1.3 ISSUES IN INFORMATION
INFORMATION OVERLOAD
Information overload is a situation where there is too much information available and there is an increasing difficulty to get the exact information needed at a certain period of time.
CONSEQUENCES OF INFORMATION OVERLOAD
Does not understand the available information.
Feel amazed by the amount of information available.
Does not know the existence of certain information.
CAUSES OF INFORMATION OVERLOAD
Multiple sources of information.
Lack of time to understand information.
Irrelevant or unimportant information.
SOLUTIONS OF INFORMATION OVERLOAD
Spending less time on gaining information.
Focusing on quality of information, rather than quantity.
Single-tasking, and keeping the mind focused on one issue at a time.
1.4 GOOD AND POOR INFORMATION
GOOD INFORMATION:
relevant.
timely.
accurate and complete.
concise.
reduces uncertainty.
POOR INFORMATION:
irrelevant.
swamping.
unclear.
not all there.
1.5 IMPORTANCE OF KNOWLEDGE TO ORGANIZATIONS
TACIT KNOWLEDGE
unwritten, unspoken, and hidden knowledge held by human being, based on his or her emotions, experiences, insight, intuition, observations and internalized information.
not printed or publish and normally resides in person's memory.
EXPLICIT KNOWLEDGE
articulated knowledge, expressed and recorded as words, numbers, codes, mathematical and scientific formulae, and musical notations.
easy to communicate, store, and distribute and is the knowledge found in books, on the web, and other visual and oral means.
