ASSURE
1- Analyze Learner Characteristics : Analyzing learner characteristics is the first step of ASSURE. We need to identify the right level for the people who are going to read the text we write.
Entry Competencies: Before starting teaching, the teachers should check what skills, attitudes, levels the student has in order to make the teaching plan according to the level of the student, and to give the right level information to the him/her.
Learning Styles: "Learning style refers to a cluster of psychological traits that determine how an individual perceives, interacts with, and responds emotionally to learning environments."
General Characteristics: We should describe the learners as much as possible considering such points as; sex, mental, emotional, physical, or social problems, socioeconomic level.
6- Evaluate and Reivse: Even though some teachers think that they already gave the information that they need to give to the students and the lesson is over, this often-skipped prt of the classes is the most important one.
Evaluate Learners: Did the learners learn what the need to learn? Did the evaluation match the learning goals the teacher set before the classroom?
Evaluate Instructor Performance: How effect,ve was the overall performance of the teacher to the students? If the class wqas fate-to-face, did they enjoy the class? Did they find the media and methods effective we provided for them?
-
Evaluate Media and Methods: Were the media and materials the teacher choose for the class effective? Did they help the students to learn better?
2- State Objectives: The next step will be stating the goals/objectives for the instructional experience. These objectives will be the information the students will get out of the lesson, LEARNING OUTCOMES.
Audience: The most important factor in learning is the learners, so we should focus on the learners, not the teacher.
Conditions: In every situation we are surrounded by in the learning environment, what do students use, in what conditions they learn, what will be the outcomes of every tool they use, are they helpful for them to learn better?
Degree: In what level should the students perform the skills they learned, apply the knowledge they learned for it to be seen as credible.
Behavior: What information will the learners have aftor the lesson, how they will apply these new skills the learned?
-
3- Select Methods, Media and Materials: After the first two stages, now we know what are the levels of our students and according to that what they will get from the lesson. In this third point, we should find materials which will be helpful for the learners to learn quickly and better in the classroom environment.
Choosing a Method: In order to help the students learn better, we should choose the right method considering the level of the students.
Choosing a Media Format: Considering such points as the instructional situation or setting, learner variables, and the nature of the objective, we should select the right media format for the learners. Every format has it's limitations and advantages, we should check each one carefully to find the right one for our students.
Obtaining Specific Materials: If we already have the materials we want suitable for the classrom we will teach, we can use it. But if there is some points that doesn't match with our objectives, we can modify them. If we don't have nothing matching with our objectives to benefit while teaching, we can always design our own.
Selecting Available Materials: If we don't have enough time or we find the 'perfect match' for our students that we believe it will be the most helpful for our students to learn better, we can use the materials made by others or things we made for other situations/classes/students before.
Modifying Existing Materials: If we find a good material that we can use while teaching but it is not entirely suitable for the class we teach, we can modify these materials in the way we want it to be.
Designing New Materials: Even though this is more expensive and time consuming, it will allow us to find the perfect match with the objections/goals that we have for the students. We must consider objectives, audience, cost and technical expertise. If we dont have enough ability or experience to do something attractive- looking we can always use a tool to guide us while we are preparing our material.
4- Utilize Media and Materials: After finding the right materials and media for the class, now we can do the lesson.
Preview the Materials: We never should use the instructional technologies before previewind them. Hardware is designed by humans, we make mistakes easily so we shouldn't expect it to work just because it is a dechnological device. We should always have a plan B.
Prepare the Environment: In the environment that we prepare to have the class in, we should set everything up for the each media/material that we choose for the students, so that they all will work while teaching.
Preapare the Learners: We should describe how we will give the information to the students, how they can take this information and continue to learn about it by themselves. For example we can explain students the methods that we're going to use while teaching and how they should react (maybe they have to answer some questions we ask, or write down some notes of impotant words) in the learnin environment.
