Chap 2: The Social Self
spotlight effect : believing that others are paying more attention to our behaviour/appearance than they really are
-
SELF CONCEPT
“What we know and believe about ourselves” (Myers &
Twenge, 2019, p. 28)
-
-
Social Comparisons
“Evaluating one’s abilities, opinions by comparing
oneself with others” (Myers & Twenge, 2019, p. 29).
- influenced by others' judgements
- compare ourselves to others and see how we differ
WHY?
When we’re uncertain about our abilities or opinions, we evaluate self through comparisons with similar others.
WITH WHO?
People who are similar to us in relevant ways (Goethals & Darley,1977; Wheeler et al., 1982)
EFFECTS:
Comparing UPWARDS reduces satisfaction
- When facing competition, we perceive the
competitor as advantaged to protect our shaky selfconcept.
Comparing DOWNWARDS, we feel better about our ‘selves’ and we might take pleasure in our peer’s failures
When self-esteem is threatened, we tend to make comparisons
with others who are worse off or our past selves (means of self-enhancement)

-
Self and Culture
- Individualism (giving priority to one's goals over group goals, defining one's identity based on personal attributes rather than grp identifications)
- Collectivism ( priority to group goals, ddefining one's identity accordingly)
- Independent self (Construing one’s identity
as an autonomous self)
- Interdependent self (Construing one’s identity in
relation to others)
- personal identity (individualism, self-contained identity, power of self-control)
- social identity ( collectivism, group-based identity, more self-critical, priority to grp goals)
-
-
-
SELF KNOWLEDGE (our emotions, attitudes, motivations, desires, personalities)
Misattribution
- studies of mood (Research: there was little perception on how well a factor predicted people’s mood)
2.People deny the influence of media
- Studies have shown that people have misattributed rainyday gloom to life’s emptiness
- Men tend to misattribute women’s friendliness to mild sexual
interest
Predicting our behaviour
1 ) Mistakes in predicting own behaviour
– Planning fallacy (The tendency to underestimate how long it will take to complete a task)
Predicting our feelings
1) mispredict how they feel
2) people have difficulty predicting intensity and duration of future emotions
3)Impact bias: Overestimating the enduring impact of emotion causing events
4) immune neglect: tendency to neglect speed and strength of the 'psychological immune system which enables emotional recovery and resilience aft bad things happen
The wisdom and illusions of self-analysis (Dual Attitude : automatic implicit attitudes regarding someone/thing often differ from our consciously controlled explicit attitudes)

Self-Serving Bias:
Self-serving bias is a by-product of how we process
and remember information about ourselves
-
Most people see themselves as better than the average person on the following dimensions: Subjective, Socially desirable, Common dimensions
-
Self-serving bias as adaptive: -provides us with a positive self esteem, protects ppl from depression, buffers stress and anxiety
Self-serving bias as maladaptive: - blame others, not acknowledging mistakes, conflict, disharmony, self-defeating behaviours
POSITIVE ILLUSIONS :“health-protective” psychological
resources that help people cope with adversity.
Evolutionary perspective adaptive advantages of self deception ( makes us less nervous, more confident in pretending to be better than we really are in our social relations )
-
Self-Presentation
Efforts to present a favorable image to an external
audience (others) and to an internal audience (ourselves) > to create a favourable impression
enhance self-esteem and self-image, gain influence and power, sympathy,
Self-handicapping
-
“Behaviors designed to sabotage one’s own performance in order to provide a subsequent excuse for failure”
eg. setting standards too high, reducing preparation, give opponent an advantage (this self-defeating behaviour protects one's self-esteem which leads to self fulfilling prophecy by attributing failures to external failures)
Sand-Bagging
-
insulates self from failure and enhances self in success, ease pressure to succeed, increase task enjoyment but increases chances of failing
-
