Parameters to consider when crafting functional exercises:
Vowels and consonants
Pitch
Volume
Speed
Duration
Breath and Body
Hypofunctional (under-engaged)
Holding (not spending) breath
Lack of deep core involvement/ large stabilizing muscles (no appoggio)
Hyperfunctional (over-engaged)
Stacking breaths
Rigidity in rib cage, locked solar plexus/abs (no buoyancy)
Emotional factors manifesting in breath and body - fight, flight, freeze - how do you create a safe space?
Allowing students to close eyes, go inside themselves
"This might be silly." "This might sound weird."
Reminding students that sound is a byproduct of movement.
Bringing everyday ways of breathing into lessons
Living in the Santa Claus effect, being expansive
Process, not perfection - exploring
Remember:
The voice is a remarkably dynamic system, and these elements interact in complex ways. However, when you are working with your students, it can be helpful to consider which elements of this chart you are working to influence/transform and how to best achieve your aims.
