Unit 10: Using Resources
Glass, Ceramics, polymers and composites

Composites
Made from two different materials that produce a material with improved properties for a particular use
Fibre glass
Tough, flexible, waterproof and low density

Haber Process
-
- Nitrogen is obtained from the air
- Hydrogen comes from reacting methane with steam to form hydrogen and carbon dioxide
-
- The reactant gases are passed over an iron catalyst. A high temperature and high pressure is used.
- The reaction is reversible so some of the ammonia produced converts back into hydrogen and nitrogen
- Ammonia cools in the condenser to liquify and is removed. The unused hydrogen and nitrogen are recycled.
Trade-offs (Compromises)
-
High pressure increases yield and rate however, they can only go up to the safe limit and to what they can afford

NPK Fertilisers
Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (NPK)
