Imperial Presidents
Theodore Roosevelt (1901 - 1908)
Started under President McKinley as a vice president named "Hero of San Jaun Hill".
Was involved in the Russo-Japanese WAR. Looked for ways to stop it with peace. Hence received a Nobel Piece prize for his efforts. This showcased that the US can interfere anywhere.
Had issues with segregation of non-white students in San Francisco. To solve that, he came up with the "Gentleman's agreement". This enabled Japan to set emigration restrictions and stop segregation in US Schools.
Though he was diplomatic, He engaged in military strength as well. like the Great White fleet. This showed the world the power the US holds.
Had many relations ship with Puerto Rico by the Foraker Act and with Cuba due to the Platt Amendment.
Big Stick Diplomacy
With the age of imperialism, he needed to find a balance between the two. It was our civil responsibility to civilize the different countries and help them establish themselves.
Depended on strong military goals for maintaining relationships. WAs based on an African saying"Speak slow and carry a big stick".

Spanish- American War
Cuban Rebellion
Warned Spain to drop out of war, by threatening interference. Was also made due to the Yellow Press Article about the private journal that got leaked. Called the president "stupid and weak".
Spain also practiced harsh and brutal acts with the Cuban People. This gained the support of many Americans.
Treaty of Paris
As a result to stop the War the US has agreed upon the treaty of Pairs. This also gives freedom to Cuba.
The issue of Philippines
The teller amendment did not give the US to take control of Cuba. But this did not apply to the Philippines. Therefore there was huge disagreement with the government. However, McKinley support expansion and taking control of the Philippines, This later sparked other rebellions in the Philippines.
Open- Door Policy
Was a result of the Boxer-rebellion that took place in China. Had to call in American Troops to dissolve it.
As a result, wanted to just trade with China as it was a good way for american inverter to invest in a foreign Market. Had no plans of colonizing China. just wanted to use the "Spheres of Influence".
William Howard Taft (1909 - 1912)
Started of as a governor for Philippines. Contributed heavily to its economy and government. Established Public Heath Systems.
Dollar Diplomacy
Wanted business throughout the Caribbean and the Central america. Like plantations, oil, mines etc.
However this also needed military strength. Like sending troops to Nicaragua in 1909.
Aimed to increase American Investors in the foreign Market. As the name suggests, wanted to focus more on the economic value.
Woodrow Wilson (1913 - 1920)
Criticized the polices of previous presidents. Looked at it differently.
Moral Diplomacy
Supported the "human rights, integrity". Was against imperialism.
However, still used military force. An example is when he sent troops to Haiti to protect American Investments (1915). Was also connected to mexico during the revolutions.
Promised that the US would never "again seek one additional foot of territory by conquest". Was against the whole "imperialistic" idea.
