The second reason was for the name of civilization

The third reason was simply for America's interests

"big stick" diplomacy

was based on the success in the spanish american war

This meant that it is absolutely necessary for america to have a really strong military so they can achieve their goals

an old saying, "speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far"

image

this act was to have the president of the united states to appoint a governor for the puerto rican legislature and then the puerto. ricans would vote from there

The platt amendment was passed in order to restrict the rights of the new independent cubans.

the reason for this was so cuba wouldn't sign a different treaty with another country or nation. They were worried cuba might do this since the the united states army did not withdraw from the island until 1902. This also limited cuba's power which at the same time will be making them stronger.

this promised the philippines that they would eventually get their independence and then 30 years later, the got their independence (after the end of the WWII)

Before he became president, he was the governor of the philippines. This means he had ties and connections and wanted to impact the phillipinnes as much as he can.

for example, he tried to protect the nation by placing the protestors in jail and preventing a lot of rebellions during this crucial time

wanted to maintain the open door policy in asia and ensure stability in latin america

to do this, he aimed for the economic issues which included american trade through foreign policy

Instead of the big stick diplomacy from roosevelt, taft focused on the dollar diplomacy

he said "dollars for bullets"

the united states investing in foreign economies in order to increase the american influence

this was to increase american investments and banks (central america and the caribbean)

Of course it was important to have a strong military but also he focused on investing in plantations, mines, oil wells, railways and other ventures

instead of the big stick diplomacy (from roosevelt) or the dollar doplomacy (from taft), he started a new one called moral diplomacy

he wanted to take the united states foreign policy in a different direction. This was to aim for "human rights, national integrity, and opportunity"

part of his message was "we must prove ourselves...upon terms of equality and honor...development of constitutional liberty in the world" (p. 229)

in order words, he wanted to make peace with the country and the democracy

he also believed other nations should be self governing

even though this diplomacy is different than the big stick diplomacy from roosevelt, it was still crucial for a strong military

an example of him using good military: in 1915, he prodded the government of Haiti to sign an agreement which gave the united states more power or control

he had a big impact on mexico

in 1911, francisco madero lost his power and general victoriano huerta took power and executed madero

Wilson was offered an agreement in a way so the american investments would be protected but because of the moral diplomacy, he declined

image

instead, he helped out someone else, named Venustiano Carranaza which was another reformer who was anti-huerta and even created forces for this

Wilson supported this and helped with the power he had which took down Huerta and Carranza became the new president
