Reading readiness deficiency
What is reading readiness?
According to UNICEF (2012) is a process of preparing a child for reading;
encouraging the child to read and engaging that child in reading.
Reading readiness entails the
maturation of all the mental, physical and socio-emotional factors involved in the reading process.
Causes
child’s socio-economic background
A child with non stable background usually does not learn well and don't make progress in reading
mental and psychological imbalance
Children who are mentally and psychologically unstable have been found to be deficient in getting ready to read.
physical
abnormalities
Those who mentally and psychologically unstable have been found to be deficient in getting ready to read.
interest of the child
Having a keen interest and desire to read propels
a child and prepares him to be social-emotionally ready for learning.
familiarity with symbols
If the home and its environment did not provide the child with the opportunity to use materials that are familiar
with whatever language they are learning, the learner’s reading ability will be retarded.
teacher’ ability to help children to learn
not providing the learners, especially during initial reading instruction, with the experiences and activities that will
make them demonstrate the abilities stated above.
Ways of improvement
Frequently Reading to the Child
Pointing out letters and word
Playing word games with the child:
Taking words apart and putting them back together
Introducing new words to the child
Reading is a receptive skill, which involves the ability to meaningfully interpret or decode written or graphic symbols of language.
