Woodrow Wilson (1913-1920)
Foreign Policy: "Moral Diplomacy"
Was against the way Roosevelt wanted to "civilize" countries and instead wanted to spread peace and democracy in the the foreign countries.
Was against the way of gaining new territory by war.
Was against Roosevelt's way of self-governing countries, and believed that nations should be self governing.
Agreed to use military to take control in the Latin American countries.
Wanted a good relationship with Latin America.
Used the military to guide Latin America in the right direction.

Wilson courted Villa, however Villa raided New Mexico and killed 18 Americans.
This led to sending over 10,000 troops to Mexico.
Had to withdraw the troops, due to World War 1.
Wilson got Haiti to sign an agreement which gave the United States the financial and foreign control over the country.

Implemented the Treaty of Paris that gave the United States control of Cuba, Puerto Rico and Guam.
Also bought the Philippines for $20 million.
Led to the Guerilla fighting which lasted 3 years.
U.S. loses many troops in the Philippines than in the Spanish-American War.
FIghts because of the divide in the Philippines.
U.S. expanded its influence and became a key player to politics in the world.
Starts to clash with China and Japan.

Did not want to colonize in China but just wanted to have free trade in China.
Wanted to have an influence of the American economy in other countries.

Enacted this to expand economic opportunities in China
Tried to create stability in Latin America.
Did this by maintaining the Open Door Policy in Asia.
Continued Roosevelt's foreign policy of the "big stick diplomacy".
Led to military intervention.
Dispatched troops in Nicaragua.
U.S. will invest in foreign countries economies to increase American influence.
American investments in businesses and banks throughout Central America and the Carribean.

Resolved the Russo Japanese War.
Won the Nobel Peace prize and showed the growth of America in the world.
