He Believed in the "Big Stick" Diplomacy
Roosevelt supposedly got the "Big Stick" idea from an old African saying. "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far".
Roosevelt believed it was America's duty to civilize smaller nations.

Roosevelt wanted a passage between the Pacific to the Caribbean Ocean.
The Panama Canal Being Built
The land of the Panama Canal was purchased for 40 million. The route would significantly shorten the time in would take to get from the east coast to the west coast. However 5,000 workers would die working on the canal.
Roosevelt Corollary updated the Monroe Doctrine to give the U.S. police power. Roosevelt described the change as a reassertion of keeping Europe out of Western affairs.
The updating of the Monroe made the U.S. like the police force of the Western Hemisphere.
Latin America didn't respond well to the change. They thought the U.S. was ever making themselves more aggressive on the world stage. It was said that the U.S. was almost losing its "sovereignty and liberty".
During Roosevelts presidency, there was a lot of anti-Asian sentiment in America. Roosevelt established the "Gentlemen's Agreement" to end Asian segregation in schools. In return, Japan would limit emigration to the U.S.

Taft wanted to increase "American investments in businesses and banks throughout Central America and the Caribbean".

Not all on Dollar Diplomacy is about business and investments. Sometimes, the military would still get involved. Taft sent troops to Nicaragua in 1909 and 1912 to "protect the formation of a formation of a pro-American government".

Taft wanted to help the Philippines recover from the war in their country. He let the Philippines have more self rule and made a public health system.

Taft "looked to substitute "dollars for bullets"". "Americans busily invested in plantations, mines, oil wells, railways, and other ventured in those regions".
Wilson believed in "Moral Diplomacy"
Wilson changed the foreign policy a lot from the previous presidents. He would state the U.S. would "never again seek one additional foot of territory by conquest". The U.S. would now focus on "human rights, national integrity and opportunity".

Even though Wilson preferred Moral Diplomacy over Dollar and Big Stick Diplomacy, he still used them.
Wilson used military force in Latin American countries to prevent European intervention there. Wilson also sent military to Mexico which caused a change in government.

Wilson wanted to make a friend between the U.S. and Latin America, he believe the U.S. "should spread peace and democracy rather than colonize foreign countries".
McKinley believed in the Open Door policy

The Open Door policy fought for equal privileges' between countries that trading with China.
Instead of making colonies, the U.S. wanted to be able to freely trade with China.
International student came to American to learn in school. This benefitted the U.S. by bringing their culture to China and gaining better relations to them.
