Panama Canal
The goal was to create a passage from the Caribbean Ocean to the Pacific Ocean through Central America.
The canal would allow the U.S. navy to control the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, which would help with military strength and trade.
Building a canal through Panama meant negotiating with Colombia, which failed. U.S. warships, however, changed Colombia's mind.
The building of the canal was a huge project which took over 35,000 workers to finish. Many of those workers died from disease and accidents.

Discrimination against Asian children in San Francisco caused tension between Japan and America. Roosevelt quickly solved this by negotiating a "Gentlemen's Pact". With America ending its segregation policies, Japan agreed to limit its emigration.
