Separation Techniques
A technique used to separate heterogenous mixtures is Filtration. Filtration is a simple method to separate a solid & liquid mixture. Filtration is used in a coffee maker, when coffee passes through the paper filter but the grounds don't.
A technique used to separate homogenous mixtures is Distillation. Distillation is when one compound is dissolved in another; in distillation the mixture is heated in order to separate its components. Distillation can be used to separate the mixture of salt & water.
A third method used to separate mixtures is the Extraction. Extraction is used when you have a compound dissolved in a liquid that you want to remove. Though distillation could do it, it takes a long time. An alternate way of making this separation is to find a liquid that isn't soluble with the first liquid and that's better at dissolving the salt than the oil is. When the two liquids are mixed and shaken, the salt will tend to move from the oil into the water. When this process is complete, it's a simple matter to pour out the water, leaving behind the pure oil
