Which of these flash points is the most serious threat to peace and stability/ most likely to cause serious conflict?
korean peninsula
- will cause instability for Japan and China since they have the 4th largest military in the world
- if Korea reunites, Japan thinks they will be their natural enemy and it will remove the current buffer for China and potentially ally with US which brings US military bases closer to it's borders
- more of a military threat yet is military threat the most serious?
Territorial disputes - South China Seas
- biggest threat to the region
- this is because it is a both a political, economic and military threat to the region rather than one isolated threat
- huge impact on trade internationally not just in east Asia if China gains control of the seas - prevent trade flowing smoothly and freely
- China will be able to set up military bases - threat to the US
