    - - The competitive race between countries to find the right Covid-19 therapy/treatment has already begun. This race has led to positive growth in the stock market.
      - However, while the countries are racing to become the country that found the cure. The stakes are high and their reputations are on the line.
- - - - The human body can build up a tolerance to these drugs and the more you use the more you need to relieve your pain.
      - If opioids are habitually used, our bodies stop producing their own and start to rely on the drug instead.
      - Opioids dull pain and boost dopamine giving many a 'high' sensation and it is easy to develop and addiction.

      - Opioids are prescription drugs used for the treatment for acute and chronic pain. Opioid deaths were five times higher in 2016 than in 1999.
    - - There are many layers to the opioid crisis. The main problem lied in the pharmaceutical industries' inability to correctly inform the medical field about the addiction risks of opioid.
      - In 2016, there were 63,632 drug overdose deaths in the United States. Opioids accounted for 66.4% (42,249) of deaths (CDC 2018)
      - Pharmaceutical companies reassured the medical community that patients would not become addicted to prescription opioid pain relievers, and healthcare providers began to prescribe them at greater rates.
      - The FDA took a defensive stand instead and was seen shifting blame upon other individuals/companies. They stated that they respected the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act*
        
        Purdue Pharma was the first pharmaceutical company to propose the drug ER oxycodone. The FDA did not adhere to the terms of this act when approving Purdue Pharma's request.
        
        Failure in Marketing Regulations:
        The labels on ER oxycodone pills were extremely vague and it allowed Purdue to heavily promote and market these drugs. The risks were minimized and benefits were exaggerated all under the FDA's knowledge. (This occurred in the year 1995)
        Just 11 years after this approval, the prescription rate of oxycodone and opioids reached 72.4%
      - The FDA was highly responsible for this drug crisis. NAS publicly called on the FDA to overhaul its opioid policies.The FDA policies for labelling and distributing opioids remain unchanged.
