Human rights violation (suppressing freedom of speech) (1) women empowerement was suppressed
(2) people were jailed for expressing individual opinions.
Aging dictatorship & charges of electoral fraud (1) arab governments were bankrupt, and people wanted a change in authority urgently. (Yemen, Egypt)
A demand for reform (began in Tunisia, spread to Egypt, Yemen, Baharain, Libya and Syria.
Consequences of the Arab Spring:
Caused regime changes (but not all of these changes were positive for working class people)
Uprisings were co opted by religious extremists
Largest refugee crisis
Long standing leaders lost authority (Yemen president)
Further war crimes and human rights violations
No freedom of speech and women empowerment
1/2 million deaths (govt bombed civillians)
Many have been arrested/jailed
Political Instability and economic stagnation
Use of social media rapidly increased the number of protests, creating more global pressure.
