Examine the impact of the US policy of containment on superpower relations between 1947 and 1964.
HISTORIOGRAPHY
Germany
Negative Impacts
By 1945 - Stalin already wanted German'y spheres of influence, in Potsdam disagreements reached a pinnacle on the build up of Germany
Soviets and the allies began tensions over Germany
1947 = what do we do with Germany
German agreements at the London conferences had failed - this strengthened the allies to build up west Germany
They were granted the democratic, federal west Germany
USSR not consulted that allies would create new currency - Deutschenmark - as a result the soviets were angered, blockading West Berlin which was heavily reliant on rail and road tracks running through soviet territory (east Germany)
BERLIN BLOCKADE : 1948 - stalin tried to restrict movement of people and foods - argued it was for economic reasons
This not only left west Germany in starvation, it also ultimately related in the creation of west and east berlin, which was eventually separated by a Berlin Wall, restricting the country as a whole (East Germany had been more poor)
