Passive transport
The cell membrane takes let lets out materials from the cell to make it function better.
Passive transport is the movement of substances through a cell membrane without using the cells' energy.
Diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of substances from a higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
An equilibrium is when diffusion continues through the membrane until the substances are same on both sides of the membrane.

Osmosis is the diffusion of water only through a cell membrane. Semipermeable also allows water to pass through the membrane until equilibrium occurs.
Facilitated diffusion
Facilitated diffusion is when molecules pass through a cell membrane using special proteins called transport proteins.
Carrier protein carry large molecules whereas channel protein form pores through the cell membrane.
Active transport
Active transport is the movement of substances throughout the cell membrane only using the cells' energy.
Substances moving by active transport go from lower to higher concentration.
Cells can take in nutrients by active transport.
Endocytosis and exocytosis
Exocytosis is when a cells vesicles release their contents outside the cell.
Endocytosis is the process in which a cell takes in a substance by surrounding it with a cell membrane.
Cell size and transport
The area of the cell membrane must be huge to include movement between substances.
If a cell were to keep on growing, it would need a large amount of nutrients and would produce large amounts of waste.
