Theories of Motivation
Instinct Theory
all organisms are born with innate biological tendencies that help them survive
Humanistic Theory
based on the idea that people also have strong cognitive reasons to perform various actions
Drive Theory
organisms are born with certain psychological needs and that a negative state of tension is created when these needs are not satisfied.
Types of Motivations
Extrinsic motivations: motivations that often arise from the individuals environment.
Involves rewards: trophies, money, social recognition, or praise
Intrinsic motivations: motivations that arise from the indivual's self.
Involves personal gratification of solving the problems
Uses of Motivation
Help people feel more in control of their lives
Help people take action
mprove overall well-being and happiness
Help people avoid unhealthy or maladaptive behaviors such as risk-taking and addiction
Help improve the efficiency of people as they work toward goals
Impact
Activation: involves the decision to initiate a behavior
Persistence: is the continued effort toward a goal even though obstacles may exist.
Intensity is the concentration and vigor that goes into pursuing a goal.
