Spanish-American War
A letter written by a Spanish Ambassador that criticized McKinley by calling him a weak and stupid politician, fueled Americas aggression, nationalism, and inflamed relations with Spain.
Soon after this letter, the Maine was exploded in the Havana Harbor where it killed 266 officers and crew out of 350 of them.
McKinley ordered a special naval board of inquiry to investigate what the cause of the explosion was but over time the investigation ultimately lead to most people blaming Spain for it.
This is what sparked the Spanish-American War to begin but later on the Spanish troops ended up surrendering to the Americans and they won the War.
The Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico became part of the U.S territory.

He pursued both goals with the aim of affecting economic issues such as expanding American trade through foreign policy.
This policy aimed to increase American investments in businesses and banks through Central America and the Caribbean.
Americans mostly invested in plantations, mines, oil wells, railways, and other ventures in those regions.
Even though he did want to rely less on the "big stick" and military intervention, he did have a case where he had to sent troops to Nicaragua in order to protect the formation of a pro-American government over there.
