Population Genetics and Evolution (Chapter 17)
Population Genetics
Gene Pool- total alleles in all the sex cells of all the individuals of a population.
Factors that cause gene pool to change:
#
Accidents
Artificial Selection
Mutation
Natural Selection
Rates of Evolution
- rate of allelic composition change over time. Typically occurring very very slowly
#
Speciation
Divergent Speciation- slow accumulation of genetic differences until considered a different species
Convergent Evolution- 2 unrelated species that resemble each other due to response of similar selection pressures
Phyletic Speciation- modern form differs from original form so much that the 2 are considered separate species
Evolution & Origin of Life
Conditions on Earth Before the Origin of Life
Chemicals present in atmosphere
Intense energy sources
Time available for origin of life had no limits because of the lack of free molecular oxygen
Chemicals produced Chemosynthetically
Formation of Polymers
Aggregation and Organization
Presence of Life
Early Metabolism
Oxygen
#
it was not until oxygen was present that we had the presence of life
Speciation cause gene pool changes
After the presence of life it took millions of years for life to evolve into what it is today
