SETTING

MAJOR CHARACTERS
A. Old woman
She is the mother of the killed thief. She brings about the tension and intensifies the conflict in the small town.
B. 12-year-old girl
She, in a way, consoles her mother by following the mother's words. She is obedient, innocent, and independent.
C. Priest
He helped bring about the purpose of the mother and daughter in going to the town. He is rather impolite as opposed to what is expected of a priest when he talked to the mother of the killed thief.
D. Priest's sister
She appears to be suspicious towards the mother and daughter rat first; however, towards the end she showed her friendliness when she tried to delay the departure of the mourning ladies to avoid the peering gazes of the townspeople.
VOICE
This short story explores third person subjective voice. The author's empathy is also strongly conveyed in the choice of words that were used.
PLOT CONFLICT
Man vs. Man
The priest was rude towards the mother and critical of how she raised her son. The priest
Man vs. Society
The society judges the mother and the sister of Carlos Centeno just because he was a thief. The woman does not mind the peering eyes of the townspeople because she believes her son was a good person.
BEGINNING
The old lady and her daughter travelled to the old town towards the church to visit Carlos Centeno, the thief who was killed by Rebecca. The old lady was rather strict and demands obedience from her daughter, and her daughter politely obliged.
MIDDLE
As the mother and daughter reached the town, it was almost siesta time that the priest was said to be having his siesta himself according to the priest's sister. However, the mother of the deceased did not waver on her demand to be allowed to have the key to the cemetery to visit her son. When the priest learnt who they wanted to visit, he was critical and openly scrutinized the way the mother raised her son which led him to becoming a thief. The mother responded in the same tone saying she does not believe her son was bad.
END
The priest noticed the peering eyes of the townspeople of all ages through the windows that he decided to let them go. However, the priest's sister suggested they should wait for the sun to go down, which was her way of protecting them from the scrutinizing gazes of the people too. Nevertheless, the mother and daughter did not yield and went ahead with their plan.
MINOR CHARACTERS
A. Carlos Centeno
The thief who was killed by Rebecca. He is the reason why his mother and sister needed to go back to the town. His mother claimed he is a good person but was oopsed to by the pirest.
B. Rebecca
She killed the thief Carlos Centeno with a revolver.
C. The townspeople
They represent the society that may or may not be at a person's side.
