If you create a bond with the student but feel they lack the knowledge or competency to pass them at the level they are studying
Feeling like the student may improve if given more time.
Anxiety
As a new mentor, the feeling of being overwhelmed with the responsibility of having a student
Consequences
The fear of looking like an incompetent mentor
risking the students place on the nursing course
the student may take the decision as personal / feeling bullied
The student may put a complaint in for being failed
The student may need to put extra hours in/ do extra study to catch up
Support
If you have only had limited time / experience with the student due to ward / dept pressures
Lack of support from department management
Lack of support from colleagues
Lack of support from university
not being familiar with how to fail a student
Having someone to discuss your concerns with to ensure they are correct
Being given extra time to spend with the student to ensure they are aware of the situation
Mentor
Lack of experience with students, this could be due to department pressures therefore a student is not allocated to you.
Thinking about failing a student can be very stressful
