The Benefits of Children Experiencing Technology as a Play Resource
How it supports physical development
Digital devices and games often require precise and varied movements in order to operate them. This will help children to develop their fine motor skills and dexterity.
Some websites and games encourage physical activity and help children to develop their gross motor skills and strength.
Links to theory
Jerome Bruner's scaffolding theory - technological devices can provide children with the scaffolding they need to develop; making learning enjoyable and engaging helps to encourage children
In addition to this, there is such a wide variety of technological resources that it is possible to pick and choose to ensure that the child is supported at their level.
How it supports emotional development
Some games can be very calming, or may play music that help children to relax when they feel stressed or emotional.
This can help them to learn how to manage their own emotions
How it supports language and communication development
Children may find it easier to develop their literacy and typing skills through technological resources; this will help them to sommunicate
Technological resources can help children to read as they can follow along with a story as the device reads it out
How it supports cognitive development
There are lots of mathematical and problem-solving games available for children to play
These games are often bright and colourful, engaging children's attention and making it easier for them to learn
How it supports social development
Some games require cooperation and teamwork, this encourages children to communicate and find a way to work with each other in order to suceed.
Placement experiences
My current setting has a large touchscreen that children can use to play simple games to support their development. I have often seen more than one child playing with it at a time - this is supporting their social and communication development.
Possible disadvantages
Digital games often promote instant gratification through the use of bright colours and sounds. This can detrimental to the development of children's attention and listening skills.
