The cities, which were the great social nucleus of the Roman world, will no longer be safe in theMiddle Ages. Without cities and without shops, the countryside became the only hope, practically, of the majority of the population of the western kingdoms. The different territories of the kingdoms were divided, then, into lordships; that is, in the lands of a Lord. Then feudal relations were born. In the case of feudalism, the relations between a Lord and a Vassal are relations of convenience: the Lord needs someone to work his land, and the peasant needs someone to protect him from
looting or invasions.
