Proteins - Coggle Diagram
Proteins
have many important functions
proteins
are essential components of cell membranes
antibodies
attack and destroy invading microorganisms
collagen
add strength to many animal tissues
keratin
for hair, nails, and skin surface
actin & myosin
responsible for muscle contraction
monomers of protein is amino acids
third component is always bonded
has a central carbon atom
bonded to amino group and carboxylic group
peptide bond
the covalent chemical bond linking two a-amino acids
examples: two aminos = dipeptide, two dipeptides = polypeptide
can be broken down by hydrolysis reaction
there are two structures
primary structure
sequence of amino acids
may contain several hundred amino acids
secondary structure
due to hydrogen bonding
has a-helix
formed by polypeptide chain
has b-pleated sheet
formed by hydrogen bonding
resulting from regular coiling
some hormones are proteins
growth hormone
follicle-stimulating hormone
all enzymes are proteins
