Acids, Bases, and pH
(Team 4: Hye Min, Sebastian, María, Yumee)
-
Types of acids
Monoprotic
-
Examples: HCl, HBr, and HCN
-
-
-
Conjugate
-
Example: The base H2O accepts a hydrogen ion
from the acid HX and becomes the conjugate acid, H3O.
Types of bases
-
Weak
Ionizes partially in an aqueous solution and leaves a lower amount/number of OH- ions in aqueous solution.
-
-
Interpretation of pH
The pH scale is used to interpret the pH value of a substance according to its acidity or its basicity.
-
-
-
Amphoteric substance
Can act like both acids or bases. When it is treated with an acid, it behaves like a base while if it is treated with an base, it behaves like an acid.
