Why it may be difficult to fail a student
Support
-Lack of support from other colleagues.
-Lack of support from university.
Lack of evidence to back up your rational as to why you have failed the student.
-Lack of resources and time to keep up to date with these resources.
-Unsure of the protocol of how to fail a student
Competence
-Self doubt! Doesnt want to come across as a bad mentor.
-Lack of knowledge of the role of a mentor and the student.
-Not having regular catch ups with the students and reviewing what they have learnt or need to improve on.
Mentors responsibility
-Having to deal with the guilt of failing a student.
-Ensuring that they have spent enough time with the student
Not giving constructive feedback
Having no evidence written down to back up the reason you have failed the student
-To liase with university and the practice educator to ensure all areas complete. Also speaking to other colleagues for help.
Emotions
-Having the fear of conflict between the mentor and the student.
-The mentor not having confidence to deal with the situation.
-Felling like failing a student will effect there career because of you. Leading to guilt.
-Feeling overwhelmed to make this big decision.
Having regular reviews with the stuent, highlighting areas that need to be worked on and improved.
Ensuring the student is aware of the goals that need to be achieved
-Lack of documentation as to why they should fail
