Body Systems
Endocrine System
Functions: to regulate body functions with the use of glands
Function of Structures: Pituitary gland is basically what secrets hormones during puberty to make you grow into an adult, Thyroid controls metabolic rate, Pancreas make insulin in your blood and helps with digestion.
Structures: Endocrine Glands, Pineal Lobe, Pituitary lobe, Thyroid, Stomach, Pancreas, Duodenum, Testis
Diseases: Graves Disease causes thyroid to produce to much hormones and lead to uneven growth, Cushings Disease causes too many adrenal hormones to be produced, and a Goiter is when your thyroid becomes swollen due to low iodine in diet.
Care: get checked regularly, manage stress, and exercise
Skeletal System
Functions: To support your body, protect your organs, help you move, store minerals, and produce blood cells
Structures: Flat Bones (scapula, hips, Sternum, Cranial Bones) Short (fingers, toes) Long (Femur, Tibia, Fibula) Irregular (Facial)
Function of Structures: Flat bones protect, Short bones move your fingers and toes, Long bones help you stand, and Irregular give you your facial features
Diseases: Arthritis causes your joints to become inflamed and cause pain, Osteoarthritis wears away at cartilage over time, Osteoporosis causes the bones to thin and weaken due to low calcium.
Care: Do weight bearing exercise, consume enough protein, and get vitamin C
Muscular System
Functions: to help you move, help you breathe, aid in digesting food, and regulates body temperature
Structures: Skeletal muscles that control the skeleton, Smooth are muscles that work in your organs, and Cardiac muscles that pump blood (heart)
Function of structures: Skeletal muscles contract and expand to move your body around, Smooth muscles move food throughout your digestive system, and your heart pumps blood throughout the body.
Diseases: Cramps happen when a muscle contracts, Hernia happens when you cause excess strain and your guts pop out into your groin, and Muscular Dystrophy is when your muscle tissue gets eaten away over time
Care: Do physical weight bearing activities 3 to 5 times a week, Ingest good lean protein, and R.I.C.E
Nervous System
Functions: To send and receive messages
Structures: Central Nervous System (In the brain and spinal cord and controls behavior) and Peripheral Nervous System (All body nerves, serves organs, your 5 senses and responds to world around you)
Functions of structures: Central nervous system controls your thinking and behavior, and Peripheral Nervous System lets you feel the world around you
Diseases: Spinal Injuries can cause numbness or permanent nerve damage, Parkinsons Disease progressively destroys nerve cells in brain that controls muscles, Epilepsy causes sudden episodes of uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain that produces seizures
Care: Sleep, Don't do drugs, and drink water
Cardiovascular System
Structures: Veins, Arteries, Heart, Blood
Functions: Provides nutrients and oxygen, carries away wastes, and helps fight disease
Functions of each structure: Arteries carry blood to body, Veins carry blood to heart, Heart pumps blood, and blood provides nutrients
Diseases: High blood pressure due to stress, bad diet
Heart Attacks due to low physical activity, and bad diet
Stroke: Blockage of artery that restricts blood flow to the brain
Care: Manage stress, dont use tobacco, avoid alchohol, have blood pressure checked regularly
Respiratory System
Functions: Provides oxygen to the blood and removes carbon dioxide
Structures: Nose, Mouth, Epiglytis, Trachea, Bronchial Tubes, Lungs, Diaphragm
Functions of Structures: Epiglottis keeps food and water out of the lungs, Trachea is the passage for air, Bronchial Tubes let air in and out of your lungs, Diaphragm contracts to help you breathe
Diseases: Bronchitis causes the bronchi to become inflamed, Pneumonia causes the lungs to become inflamed which is caused by a viral or bacterial infection, Asthma: Inflammatory condition that causes airway to become constricted and preventing breathing
Care: Don't smoke, Drink water, avoid air pollution
Digestive System
Functions: To digest food, Absorb nutrients, and Eliminate waste
Structures: Salivary gland, Oesophagus, Stomach, Liver, Gallbladder, Pancreas, Small intestine, Large intestine, Rectum
Function of Structures: The stomach breaks down food with stomach acid, Liver filter any and all things the body consumes, and the Small intestine delivers nutrients to the bloodstream
Diseases: Constipation is when your poop is dry and hard due to lack of water, Diarrhea is when poop is liquididous and can cause dehydration, and Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix, which can burst
Care: Eat fiber, Drink lots of water, and eat lean meats
