- - - - Walter👱🏾wants to be wealthy and open up a liquor store with his friends so he can properly provide for his family. He presents this to Ruth in Act 1 Scene 1 of the story, (pages 27-27). He tells Ruth : "This morning, I was lookin' in the mirror and thinking about it...I'm thirty-five years old: I been married eleven years and i got a boy who sleeps in the living room- (Very, very quietly) - and all I got to give him is stories about how rich white people live..." Here it is very clear to the audience that he is very unhappy with their current lifestyle and he would like more for his family.
      - Beneatha👸🏾wishes to finish medical school- she wants to over come gender and race discrimination by being a female, black doctor - which at the time seemed very absurd. In the play, she argues with Walter about her ambitious career choice and he dismisses her blatantly, seen in Act 1, Scene 1 - Walter tells her “Who the hell told you you had to be a doctor? If you so crazy ‘bout messing ‘round with sick people-then go be a nurse like the other women-or get married and be quiet…"
      - Ruth👩🏾wishes for wealth and to move out of the "ghetto". She dreams of a better life for her family. She is extremely happy when she finds out that mama bought them a new house and says "PRAISE GOD" when told the news and goes on expressing her joy - page 67 Act 1 Scene 2.
      - Mama👵🏾dreams of having a real home where she can garden. Presented on page 41 of the book, Act 1, at the end of Scene 1 ; "Well, I always wanted me a garden like I used to see sometimes at
        the back of the houses down home."
  - - - Beneatha:
        The character Beneatha faces both gender and racial discrimination in the drama piece. she faces gender discrimination from her brother Walter Lee Younger as he urges her to go for a less high end position but of the same occupational area, insinuating that her dream to become a doctor is least likely to happen or a waste of time and money. "who the hell told you you had to be a doctor? if you so crazy 'bout messing 'round with sick people- then go be a nurse like other women-or just get married and be quiet" act one scene one . Beneatha also faces likely chances of racial discrimination because at the time there were minimal well known black doctors especially ones who were female.
      - Walter Lee younger: This character faces likely racial discrimination, we see this when his occupation is stated, this being that he is a driver. This gives us the impression that even if he has the possible potential to be more than a driver he is unable to get a better job due to the color of his skin and therefore is weighed down by the breadwinner struggle places upon him.
        
        Ruth: This character faces gender discrimination as she is degraded to being a care take and a house cleaner, "you are in it- Don't you get up and go work in somebody's kitchen for the last three years..." act one scene one. she is unable to get a better job because she is a woman and is immediately chained to the compulsory tasks of domestic work. However, she does not show any resentment to the job she has but takes it with grace and strength as it is somewhat a way to provide for herself and her family.
  - - - Walter fantasizes a lot about how money would increase his social standing and give him a higher position in the social class. It is clear to the reader that he is continually frustrated by the inability to fulfill the masculine role of financial provider for his family, so he is desperate to get his hands on some of the insurance money to make that happen.
        Walter sees money as a way of life- he states in Act 2 Scene 1 when arguing with Mama.
      - For Mama, money is not of great importance in her life, "Once upon a time freedom used to be life-now it's money. I guess the world really do change." She simply wants a happy life and family, so she gives Walter some money for his liquor tor and the rest of the money to make him feel in charge of the family (to help him regain is pride) and she remains with nothing.
      - Beneatha needs the money to finish medical school, it is very important to her as a woman of the black race so she is fixed on getting the money. The people around her do not think what she wants to achieve is possible so she desperately needs the money to prove everyone wrong.
      - Unlike Beneatha and Walter, Ruth wants the money to live a better life, outside of "the ghetto" but she seems rather pessimistic and hopeless as if there is no way to get money for the Younger family. Presented in Act 1 Scene 1 when Walter is trying to express his opinion about their living conditions and how he has the chance to do something about it but has no money : she dismisses him by saying "Man, if you don’t shut up and leave me alone."
