World War Two
The Emergence of Stalin’s Authoritarian State
The conditions in which Stalin’s
authoritarian state emerged
Stalin as Commissar of Nationalities
Stalin first became a member of the Communist Party in the year 1917 and was then appointed as the Commissar of Nationalities
Stalin was for the idea/ fully supported the plan to take power in October (1917). He however had an argument with Lenin about wanting the Republics to be ruled in a certain/specific way (strong centre w/ strong discipline). Result: Stalin was suspected of wanting to restore centralized control (not a good result)
The Russian Civil War
Trotsky’s role within the Civil War
Trotsky lost support from Stalin, Zinoviev, and Kamenes over his opinion/place on the New Economy Policy and his support for a “Permanent Revolution”. He also had a policy where “Socialism is one country” that was attacked by Kamenes because Kamenes didn’t agree with Stalin’s policy and thought process.
Stalin’s role in the Russian Revolution
The Russian Civil War took place between 1918 and 1920. It was conflict that rose and it resulted in the red army successfully defending the bolshevik government that was led by Vladimir l
Lenin’s early death
Role of Lenin’s testament
Lenin's testament - a series of memorandums written between the years of 1922 and 1923. It included and reflected on the personalities in the leadership of Communist Party and who were Lenin's most likely successors.
Lenin came to the realization and was able to understand near his death that Stalin was too powerful and he wrote that it was recommended that Stalin be removed from his position as the General Secretary to avoid further issues from developing because he knew he was close to death
The Lenin Enrollment
The Foundations of Leninism
The Foundations of Leninism was a collection written by Joseph Stalin in 1924 that included nine lectures he delivered at Sverdlov University that same year (1924).
The Lenin Enrollment was to encourage people to join the party as a sign and as a mark of respect for the great leader which was Lenin. This is what Stalin started to use to get more people to join and this way of joining the party can be found as the party policy in the Foundations of Leninism.

War Scare of 1927
Economic factors
War Communism v. NEP
War Communism wanted to ensure that food in countryside was delivered to cities to feed workers and to feed soldiers in army
War Communism was able to provoke opposition from peasants and the soldiers in the army
The NEP was able to keep a state of control. Results of this were: a "heavy" industry, transportation, and privately owned businesses were now a thing.
Requisitioning and its impact
on the peasant population
Famine was caused because peasants were forced to give their food that they themselves were producing. This resulted in the peasant population decreasing because of the lack of food.
The Scissor Crisis
a decline in the cost of food and the increase in the cost of industrial goods
an incident in 1923 during the New Economic Policy, when there was a widening gap between industrial and agricultural prices
