How does music affects the brain??????????????????
Music and the Brain Functions
How is music helpful to the brain?
Playing music improves activity of corpus callosum which connects the creative side of the brain to the academic side of the brain.
Playing music is an equivalent of a full body workout for the brain.
Because music involves creativity and understanding of the message, musicians may have improved
executive functions
.
Executive functions includes planning, strategizing and attention to detail it requires academic and emotional functions to work together.
Music can help better our immune systems, help dampen our feeling of pain and better some cognitive functions.
Music fires immunity boosting anti-bodies
Music fires cells and bacteria against other invaders
Music creates cortisol dampeners, which makes us less stressed from the evil cortisol.
Music can improve impulse control
What parts of the brain are connected to music?
prefrontal cortex
Where are executive functions develop and live
Music requires the prefrontal cortex to develop a little bit every time we pick up an instrument!
corpus callosum
Connects the creative side of the brain to the academic side of the brain.
Do people who practice and enjoy music have anything that is different in their brain?
Gray matter volume is increased in areas in the brain when learning to play an instrument or listening to music.
Does music exercise your brain to improve academic function?
When we learn music it is a full-out workout for our brains so when we go to learn something different it is easier to learn when our brain think that this is not as hard as learning music so surely I can do it!
What kind of hormone is released when you hear music?
dopamine
A neurotransmitter that makes us happy
How does the brain interpret the music (path)?
Involves every part of the brain
Usually a right brain activity because of the creativity. But brain imaging has shown it can involve both sides of brain.
Music does not follow a certain path, a lot of it happens at the same time.
auditory cortext responsible for analyzing features such as pitch and volume.
Cerebellum - breaks down musical information
Higher order brain structures - analyze music into an enjoyable experience
Amygdala and Frontal lobe - Pleasure centre, transmits dopamine
Different types of music stimulates different areas of the brain
Music and Emotions
Do different genres of music effect the brain different? How or why does it do that?
What types of music are best for certain tasks?
Classical music is good music to play because it seems to improve our brain development.
Upbeat/positive music can provide energy boost, and help with learning.
Instrumental music can help with concentration, focus and calmness
Does music make us want to move around? And how? Why?
There are connections between auditory neurons and motor neurons.
When you exercise with music your body tend to move to the beat, this results in a boost of self confidence and creates a positive correlation with exercise.
Music inspires us to move because it triggers muscular and auditory neurons.
Does music affect moods? And why?
It was found when children play musical instruments it improves attention skills, anxiety management and emotional control
Music keeps us from focusing on feelings like fatigue, especially during exercise
How does music help you focus? Relax? Communicate?
When you play music in an orchestra it helps you develop non-verbal social skills and through research we have found the children who practice music grow up to have good relationships and are empathetic to fellow humans
Playing music with others teaches us to listen carefully in a very aware fashion. It help us understand that what we play affects the other person and this improves our self awareness
Music may somehow dampen elevated hormones which contribute to fatigue.
Explain and describe why music is therapeutic to so many?
Music does not have to be pursued on a hope for professional level, because it can make a child a more confident learner and give them something to enjoy and to love
It helps treat conditions like depression, Parkinson's and premature birth
Pain Reduction
music release opioids; the bodies natural pain relievers
Stress Relief
relaxing music reduce cortisol levels; hormone released in response to stress
Connection
Memory
Music leads to emotion and emotion leads to memory
Brain Injury
Stroke patient that listen to music recover faster than those who do not.
Stroke patients who lose their speech abilities can receive therapy that converts singing into speech
Music and Academic Functions
Can music help us remember things? And why?
Singing helps us explore words and language with a familiar tune which enhances our memory of what we sung
Connection:
Lately I have been listening to the musical Hamilton and I have found that I now know a ton of American history and I can sing half the songs almost perfectly! Just from this musical I have learned more about american history then my dad has in a whole lifetime! I find I fascinating that such a interesting musical could teach me so much!
Music can improve brain functions like: Auditory processing, learning, and memory
Connection
When we are stressed our brain fogs up and does not allow us to remember what we are trying to learn. So, music can put our brains into a calm state which can clear the fog and allow us to go back to proper functions.
How is it possible to memorize a whole song and where do you store the info?
We enjoy listening to music therefore we remember lyrics
It is easier for our brains to remember lyrics when there is repetition and rhythm
What do studies show about the effects of music on students? On studying?
Music lessons on preschoolers have proved to be benifical for their brains because it make new connections throughout the brains structure! These children have been proven to be great at problem solving and they are better at learning complex things at a young age
