Cause: Through trauma or regular wear & tear joint cartilage is damaged & doesn't repair. This leads to a cascade of events that leads to further loss of joint cartilage causing penetration of synovial fluid, eventually leading to bone remodeling and eventually bone damage. As it progresses joint mobility decreases and stiffness and pain increase. Most common in weight bearing joints or joints that experience repetitive motions. Can effect multiple joints especially as stress increases with avoidant use of first effected joint.
S&S/complications: Joint pain, initially with use/exertion eventually worsening to increased pain duration and pain at rest. Slowly advances to reduced ROM/immobility, swelling, and joint deformation.
