Early 1800s: William Caslon IV, was not fond of the serif tails on his grandfather's font, thus he introduced a new typeface, sans-serif font, by removing the tailings entirely. Although this was not as popular at the start, it eventually gained popularity. In modern day, these fonts work well to convey simplicity, modernity, or minimalism.

1886: Ottmar Mergenthaler was a German inventor. His nickname was the second Gutenberg, which references Johannes Gutenberg because he was the first to introduce the first mechanical movable printing press. Mergenthaler, however, created the Linotype machine which would type out set lines for printing presses.
1927: Paul Renner created Futura which is one of the examples of Geometric sans. He was a German type designer and this style was revolutionary because it was an introduction to clean geometric shapes. Many brands use this type such as Calvin Klein, Crayola, Domino's Pizza, Red Bull, and USA Today.
1928: Eric Gill was paid to create a "fool proof" typeface, this was to direct the attention to his type instead of the infamous Futura. Gill Sans was the creation and an example of it would be the humanist sans typeface. The characterizations of the typeface would be natural variation more than geometric.
