The humanistic approach
conditions of worth = where a boundary or limit is placed on love/ respect for an individual .
- set up by anyone including individual
- if not met can lead to low self esteem as ideal self would meet the condition of worth
- ex. media says you're only beautiful if you're skinny
low self esteem if there is little overlap between perceived self image and ideal self image (incongruence)

Origins of Psychology
1879 - Wunt established first psychology lab
1900s - early behaviourists. Watson argues introspection subjective so 'scientific' psych should only study things that can be observed/measured
1930s - skinner brings lang of natural sciences to psychology. Behaviourism focuses on learning and uses controlled lab studies
1950s- cognitive revolution argues to study internal mental processes making inferences using scientific procedures = controlled lab studies
1990s - biological approach introduce technological advances in genetic research such as EEG and fMRI
Wunt - aimed to describe the nature of human consciousness in a controlled/scientific environment.
- Pioneered method of introspection= studying mind by breaking up conscious awareness into basic structures of thoughts, images and sensations
- breaking up consciousness in this way is called structuralism
- Standardised procedures used to allow for replication
- Wunt's work was significant as it established psychology as a science.
