SODIUM- EXPERIMENT - Coggle Diagram
SODIUM- EXPERIMENT
-
Procedure
- cut piece of sodium metal in half
-
- check reaction with water
-
- use phenolphthalein to see what you have made
Conclusion
- oxygen layer is obstacle for shyne on sodium
- metals of the first group become softer as we go down the PSE
- Sodium in water formed hydrogen gas
-
- water and sodium produced sodium hydroxide
Observations
- sodium metal when cut- shiny (easy to cut through)
- sodium metal floated on water and relised gas
- sodium gas extinguished the candle
- phenolphthalein in the water in which sodium was melting, turned purple-pink color.
Equation
2Na(s) + 2H2O(l)
2NaOH (aq) + H2(g)
