Necrosis of tissue with
superadded putrefaction,
most often following coagulative necrosis
due to ischaemia
(gangrene of bowel, limb)

Grossly:
dry, shrunken, dark black.

Usually occurs in moist tissue and organs : bowel, lung, mouth, cervix, vulva
Examples:
- diabetic foot,
- bedsores (due to pressure)
- Blockage of both venous and arterial blood flow
- Affected part stuffed with blood
(promotes bacteria growth)
- Toxic products of bacteria absorbed causing septicaemia
Grossly:
soft, swollen, putrid, rotten and dark.
