Methods suitable for animals other than fetal, larval & embryonic forms:

Exposure to a rising concentration of carbon dioxide (appropriate for birds and rodents up to 1.5 kg (but not neonatal rodents)).

Amphibians and reptiles (with destruction of the brain before the return of consciousness) up to 1 kg.

Non animals e.g. fetal/ larval & embryonic forms: overdose drugs, refridg, cooling in cold tissue fixative, decapitation

Protected animal is living until... (1) circulation stops (2) brain is destroyed.
Decerebrate animals = lviing

Regulated procedures: e.g.
- altered diet
- substances in food/ water
- withdraw food/water
- substance into egg
- mating to produce defective offspring
- biopsy of tail tips, skin, scales
- parenterally added subs
- physical restraint
- gas exposure
- withdraw blood form superficial vessels
- induce anaesthesia
- killing by a non- schedule 1
- removal of tissues under terminal anaesthesia

- husbandry
- tagging, chipping, ringing
- vet stuff
- humane killing under section 1
