A Students Learning Needs
developing knowledge
Identify where they need to develop and what the students expected learning points from the placement are
Explore alternative ways of learning such as hands on and practice or explore learning resources available like library, text sources and skills of other professionals to observer
Identify students current knowledge bases and limitations at present
quizzes that hold a reward encouraging engagement.
Rules of the placement
Honesty amongst mentor and student
Building a trusting professional relationship enabling the student to be open with the mentor about there needs.
Arriving on time to working days with a positive attitude ready to care and learn.
Feed back shift by shift identifying development points early allowing time to put these points into action.
Feedback about the mentor ie dose the student feel supported.
developing hands on nursing skills
building from knowledge learnt in other settings and previous placements if possible
explore particular interests and look at how these can be developed ie arranging days with specialists or other linking services.
reading through placement documentation with the student to discover what hands on skills needed to learn from this placement
pay additional time to subjects or areas student feels they are lacking or struggling with exploring alternative learning to support the student with these areas further
introduction to the policies and enviroment
introduce student to important local polices that must be adhered to ie falls, fire etc
introduce to NMC code and other expectations set out by out governing body.
introduce the student to the area, routine, and layout
discuss setting to depth needed by student especially if unfamiliar with hospitals
correct student behaviour
speak up and give feedback on both good and bad points anything that can be developed/ learnt from for either the student or mentor
appearance correct uniform and clean
encourage engagement with all activity's including what can be seen as basic as these are often vital.
appropriate attitude towards both staff and patients
encourage student to work as though this is there permanent setting and encourage staff to treat the student as such, ensuring they feel part of the team and are involved as such.
