Moroccan Crisis'
First Moroccan crisis (1905 - 1906) - Great Britain and France decided they wanted to take Morocco under the French Sphere of Influence. This angered Wilhelm though, as he wanted colonies in Africa. Wilhelm then visited Morocco and promised to support their independence through an open door speech. This infuriated the French. In 1906, there was a conference held in Algeciras. Between Great Britain, France and Russia, they decided that Germany has no say in the Moroccan affairs. This caused the formation of the Triple Entente. The kaiser did this to test the agreement between the nations . But he was left humiliated and angry. Germany was beginning to feel surrounded by its enemies.
Second Moroccan crisis ( 1911 ) - The french helped the Sultan to crush the rebellion against his rule, this is their opportunity to take over Morocco. Germany sent a Pather (German gunboat) to pressure the French into giving them good land. They are given 100,000 sq/m of French Congo (mainly swamp land). After seeing the German gunboat, Great Britain felt threatened by the German navy and therefore made an agreement with France to protect the North Coast (nearest to them). Wilhelm is infuriated by the turn of events and is therefore determined not to lose again. This leads to a stronger alliance between France and Britian.
Naval Race and Arms race
Great Britain has a very big navy due to the fact that they were an island. This allowed them to have a huge overseas empire. In 1898, Tirpitz build up the German navy to rival Great Britain's.
Great Britain saw this as a challenge to their empire and so after 1906, both nations began to increase their navy by building up " Dreadnoughts ". This race reached a peak in 1909. The British government planned to only build up 4 dreadnoughts in 1909 - 1910, but the public pressure mounded and they had to increase spending on the British fleet
Arms race - By 1914 Germany had the greatest increase in military build-up. Germany and Great Britain also greatly increased their navies in this time period.
