CH 1: Heart-brain Communication - Coggle Diagram
CH 1: Heart-brain Communication
Neurocardiology
Comprised of 3 fields
Neurophysiologist
Neuroanatomist
Cardiologist
Without Heart-brain the heart cannot function properly
Two-way street of communication
Descending activity
Comes from the brain via the ANS
Affects heart rate, heart rhythm and hormones.
Involved in the regulation of the heart
Ascending activity
Neural Output
Messages from the heart-brain to the brain
Path for neural output: both spinal column and vagus nerve → medulla→ hypothalamus → thalamus → amygdala → cerebral cortex.
Heart behaves independently
Sends more info to the brain than than the brain sends to it.
It can send messages to the brain that can affects a person's behavior, perception and performance
Heart as a Hormonal Gland
Secretes hormones and neurotransmitters
ANF "The Balance Hormone" discovered
Regulates blood, vessels, kidneys, adrenal glands and other regulatory centers of the brain
Inhibits release of stress hormones, reduces sympathetic outflow and interacts with the immune system
In 1983 reclassified as part of the hormonal system
Releases various hormones
Norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine and oxytocin
Oxytocin plays a role in childbirth, lactation, cognition, tolerance, trust, and friendships.
HEART-BRAIN IS ALSO CALLED INTRINSIC CARDIAC NAERVOUS SYSTEM.
