In 1838 a group of working-class radicals drew up a People's Charter demanding:
voting by secret ballot
pay for members of parliament
equal ectoral districts
annual elections of parliament
universal male suffrage
The Chartist movement failed, altrough theirinfluence was later felt in the Second Reform Act in 1867
Causes:
Dependence on potato crops
Descruction of crops because of bad weather and unknown plant disease
Rise in population in 1845
What was done?
1846: Prime Minister Peel abolished the corn Laws, wich imposed tariffs on imported corn, keeping the price of bread high
Results:
Decline of Irish language
New Catholich landlords
2 million emigrated by 1851
Hatred for Britain
1 million died of disease and starvation
