Deforestation
Impacts
Loss of biodiversity
An average of 137 species a day go extinct in the rainforest, but there's around 3 million species in the TRF
Deforestation doesn't just kill the trees, but also the flora and fauna which live with it, some important (medicinal properties)
Destroys habitat
-
For tribes who live there, forced out to the city
-
Contributes to climate change
Burning the trees, not only destroy the carbon sink, but release the stored carbon back into the atmopshere
-
-
Solutions
Eco-tourism
-
-
Very small-scale, otherwise you risk the chance of damaging the rainforest
-
Conservation and education
Good for education, scientific research, and tourism
-
-
-
Causes
Agriculture
Commericial farming is the biggest cause for deforestation (£5.5 billion from trading cattle). Large scale farming projects, like soya
-
Energy development
-
Provides cheap and renewable energy, but harms nature
Logging
-
Used for construction, not for paper
-
About the TRF
Features and Adaptations
-
Tree trunk
Thin bark with no branches until the canopy layer, so the tree can put all it's energy into reaching canopy layer to get sunlight
Teak and mahogany, very hard wood
-
Lianas
-
They are very thin, thus are more susceptible to wind, however use the trees to stay high
-
Drip-tip leaves
-
-
-
Climate
-
Lots of rainfall
Very heavy rain, nearly everyday
-
Winter and spring are higher rainfall months, summer is lower
Heat
-
-
Constantly hot, but not too hot
Location
-
-
The TRF's are located on the tropics, near the equator
-
