VICTORIAN AGE
In this period there is the great development of England, but is also the beginning of the end. It was a period of great wealth, great poverty and great expansion (England became the most important colonial power in the world) which meant great wealth.

IMPORTANT CHANGES
More democratic government than all over Europe, because there was the possibility to vote for many people (not only aristocrats). With the 3 reform bills, the whole male population could vote. (females could vote in 1918).

Factory Act : 10 hour act, children couldn’t work more than 10 hours a day

In the past there were no holidays, no health benefits, no pensions.
There was a great gap between the haves and the have nots (rich and poor), the rich people became more rich, and the poor became more poor.
workhouses were built, these were places where you’d go when you were too poor to live. In exchange for their accommodation, the workers had to suffer whilst working long shifts and they would also be exploited. Children, women and men were divided.

Boer War → Based in South Africa, when european countries fought against England. It was not a colonial war.
Kipling R meant colonisation was spread of white civilization, not exploitation.
1851: in Crystal Palace, Queen Victoria held an annual expo at the Crystal Palace to showcase new technological advances and innovative inventions.

Queen Victoria married the love of her life Prince Albert, they had 9 children. These children married reigning queens and kings around the world.
Prince Albert died of typhus, because of that Queen Victoria became disheartened and miserable. After this she didn’t marry anyone else.
