Maths topics with ideas and CCLS; Year 1
measures length and weight
CCL with DT they could follow a recipe involving measurements
teaching of length could be taught using the topic of height, students could take each others measurements (only non triggering ones such as height and length of limbs)
Teaching of weight could be taught using weighing their favourite toys or items from their pencil cases
Money
CCL; geography, speak about the different types of currency across the world
recognise the difference between £ and p and know that there are 100 pennies in a pound
realia; use of objects to physically represent the money
number sense, using imagery to visually illustrate to the students what the money is
inclusion
EAL; visual tools to make the information more accessible
SEN; use of group work to make sure that students are grouped by how they learn, for example, ASD students in groups with gentler students
ADHD; make sure all tasks are short and there are many to hold students attention, particularly those with ADHD
Number and place value
this could have a CCL with whatever MFL is being taught in the school as they can also practice counting from 1-20 in that language
to teach cardinal value they could hand you flash cards of the number, they can also make the number out of the flash cards which could be a CSL with money
counting could be taught with music which could then correspond with a CCL lesson on counting the beat of a song
reading and writing numbers can be done with whiteboard races
time
they have to understand hours minutes and seconds
this can be taught using their knowledge on fractions as a CSL
fractions
points in curriculum with CCLs
recognise, find and name a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity
CSL with time as we speak about the hour in measures of a half
CCL with geography when we earn about the north and south equator that essentially splits the earth in half
this could be taught using realia and play dough to visually represent a half
recognise, find and name a quarter as one of four equal parts of an object, shape or quantity
CCL with art, most origami shapes involve creating quarter foulds in the paper the students could learn basic origami and learn about shapes that start with a half fold and a quarter fold
this could also be taught visually with coloring in graphs
addition and subtraction
Points of curriculum with CCLs
read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving addition (+), subtraction(–) and equals (=) signs
this could be a CCL with italian (should the school let you teach it as an MFL) because it is very simple in italian and they should have learnt to count to 20
this could be taught through objects (as it is only up to 20) which gives it a CSL with number and place value
represent and use number bonds and related subtraction facts within 20
this can be taught through group work problem solving
add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero
again I would teach this using objects
CCL with drama, have students act out the process of going from 20-1 to 19
Shapes
CCL; abstract artist Aubrey creates beautiful abstract art that includes shapes that allude to those taught in geometry
points in curriculum with CCLs
understand patterns and recognise sequences of shapes in patterns
CCL with English in that they are using their descriptive language, you could ask them to give synonyms to the descriptions they are using
understand the properties of 2d and 3d shapes and recognise them
