HARD TIMES, "Coke Town" (pag 56)
-
This passage introduces a typical Victorian town, a town that has been industrialized.
This description tells us about the consequences of industrialization, like the fact that the red brick houses would have still been red if there wasn't any smoke or ash
The people of the town are described as being very similar to each other, just as the houses and streets are similar to one another too.
This seems very mechanical which can link back to the fact that due to the industrialization, many machines were introduced to workplaces and everyday life.
The only building that is an exception to this is the New Church, but overall the emphasis of the passage is placed on the fact that every building looks similar.
