The imbalance of power between men and women
Evidence: The glistening white of my grandmothers bones - In this case it is a metaphor for how past generations of women have been literally consumed and oppressed by the patriarchy and by greedy and predatory men
Analysis
She shows here how men take from and 'consume' women and their innocence. Men have through the patriarchy enforced their wants on women with or without consent. This cycle repeats itself to maintain the power imbalance between men and women
message
Women should be aware of how some of their behavior, the actions of their ancestors and parents, and how the actions of certain men continue the cycle women being in a submissive and therefore imbalance position compared to men.
Loss of innocence and youth
Evidence: The beginning of the poem is spent talking about how he is her first lover, perhaps had her first drink of alcohol and first sexual encounter with the wolf
Analysis: Her use of the wolf as her specific metaphor implies she felt prayed upon (wolf if predator), that his taking of her innocence and youth was intentional
message: People ought to be aware of who their first experiences are shared with, as these people may have ulterior motives. The other message of this is how precious these things can be and to cherish them and notice when they leave you or another person.
effect of toxic relationships on young people
Evidence: "and it took ten years in the woods to tell that a mushroom stoppers the mouth of a buried corpse"
Analysis: It took her a long time to realize that the negative effects on her life, her bad behavior's, habits, etc (the mushrooms), came from and fed of her bad/toxic relationship with that professor (the corpse)
