Pharmacologic therapy
Diuretics - fluid retention and ascites. Aldactone is the drug of choice because it addresses increased aldosterone levels, which is one of causes of ascites.
Lactulose and neomycin - reduces ammonia forming organisms in the bowel and increases the acidity of colon contents.

Ferrous sulfate and folic acid - to treat anemia. Vitamin K may be given to reduce risk of bleeding.

Cirrhosis
Diagnostic tests
Liver function tests include; AST, ALT, and total bilirubin will be elevated.
CBC water platelets; low hemoglobin, hematocrit-anemia.

Coagulation studies; prolonged prothrombin times-impaired coagulation proteins and lack of vitamin K.

Serum electrolytes; hyponatremia (hemodilution), hypokalemia, hypocalcemia (decreased vitamin D reserve, decreased fat-soluble vitamin absorption).

Serum ammonia; elevated because of failure to effectively convert ammonia to urea for renal excretion.
