Nature v.s Nurture

The nature v.s nurture debate
involves the extent to which certain
aspects of behaviour are inherited
or acquired
Nature = people behave the way
they do because they are animals who
act in accordance with their animal instincts
-
-
-
Nurture = people behave the way they do because they are determined by the influence of others (through observation and modelling) and the situation they are put in
-
-
-
This is an important debate in society - if behaviour is entirely down to nature, it suggests that our genetics and brain structure cannot be changed
Twin studies
If the concordance rate between
MZ twins is high, we can expect
the behaviour to be genetic
If the concordance rate between
DZ twins is high, we can expect
the behaviour to be environmentally influenced
Adoption studies
Useful because although they are
genetically similar, the environment of the
adopted child and their biological family is different
If the adopted child and their adoptive parents are more similar on a certain characteristic, it can be said to be nurture
-
Cross-cultural studies
If a characteristic is found in several cultures we can say it is likely to be as a result of nature, where as if it is only found in one culture it can be said to be caused by nurture
